The Synopsis for Blindspotting (2018) 720p

Collin (Daveed Diggs) must make it through his final three days of probation for a chance at a new beginning. He and his troublemaking childhood best friend, Miles (Rafael Casal), work as movers and are forced to watch their old neighborhood become a trendy spot in the rapidly gentrifying Bay Area. When a life-altering event causes Collin to miss his mandatory curfew, the two men struggle to maintain their friendship as the changing social landscape exposes their differences. Lifelong friends Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal co-wrote and star in this timely and wildly entertaining story about friendship and the intersection of race and class set against the backdrop of Oakland. Bursting with energy, style and humor, Blindspotting, boldly directed by Carlos López Estrada in his feature film debut, is a provocative hometown love letter that glistens with humanity.

Same old issues ( except unless you have no other access to news and editorials) with no new insight.

Plus some hackneyed attempt of symbolism that is praised by others whom must have forgotten how others did it so much better decades ago.

Hilarious and thought provoking film from first time writers and lead men Daveed Diggs and Rafael CasalReviewed byhammersb-29911Vote: 9/10

For first time screenplay writers Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal, Blindspotting has been a passion project with an original idea that dates back 9 years. With elements of the story being based the duos personal experiences growing up, it is clear from the opening shots they want the audience to experience every aspect of their own community in which the film is centred around. An idea made clearer by the choice to place themselves in the two leading roles. They put in two of the most natural and powerful performances I have witnessed this year. The duo approached novice film director Carlos Lopez Estrada to drive the film, with the agreement that this would allow them more artistic control, ensuring the film remained in their vision.

The film follows Collin (Diggs) who is serving the final three days of his probation. As he try's to remain out of trouble, despite the best efforts of volatile best friend Miles (Casal), Collin witnesses a callous cop shooting. This event begins to haunt him, as it changes the way he views himself and the people around him.

Digg's and Miles provide the kind of chemistry in the leading roles that comes from a lifelong friendship. At times, it can feel like watching a documentary, as the pair bounce dialogue between each other, whilst performing there characters menial job. This feeling is contrasted by the sense of heightened realism used to propel the more comedic moments of the film. With a mix of fast paced editing style, and use of vibrant colours on sets, this helps to distinguish the comedic aspects from the drama.

Along with powerful performances from Diggs and Casal, it is the community that has been built around these central characters which furthers the films social commentary. Characters who only appear for a single moment, can be given the responsibility of progressing a story usually left for the leads. Two characters walk into the film midway, and describe a situation to the audience in the style most recently utilised in Ant Man (2015). The situation is played out on screen for the audience, whilst the story tellers voice is lip synced to the characters within it. This scene is the perfect example of the films ability to balance the tonal switch between drama and comedy.

Some may understandably find flaws with the films scatter gun approach to subject matters that it attempts to touch on; from racial discrimination, to gentrification, leading to surface level observations and the films messier moments. However, I believe this adds variety to the community the film has built, something that is found in our normally lives, therefore adding accessibility for the viewer. When the film goes deeper into its core subjects, we are presented with powerful and thought provoking scenes, such as the heated discussion between Collins and Miles towards the end of the film.

Despite this being a multiple of firsts for the main contributors of the film, this feels like it could have been created by many of the experienced filmmakers in which the film has taken inspiration from. With the levels of social commentary best utilised by the likes of Spike Lee (Do The Right Thing, Blackkklansman), and the witty buddy comedy elements most recently accomplished by Shane Black (The Nice Guys, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang).

It does leave me questioning whether this is the start of strong careers for all involved, or just a flash in the pan moment. Regardless of the answer, in a year filled with films that have touched on similar themes (Blackkklansman, The Hate U Give, Sorry To Bother You), this stands on its own as a uniquely powerful piece of cinema, and one of the best films 2018 has to offer.
