The Reviews for Roma (2018) 1080p

Disappointingly LackingReviewed byebfbeVote: 6/10

At the core of every good film, I believe, are three essential components: exposition, motivation, and arc. Roma is disappointingly lacking in all these respects, as Cuaron's vision of a deeply personal family history simply does not translate well.

There's no point in critiquing Roma without first acknowledging its setting: Mexico in the early 1970s. Now I already know about the country's long-standing tradition of classicism. I can tell you that, historically, poor, indigenous people - women in particular - constitute a servant class for Mexico's urban-dwelling, white elite. Like the film's Cleo (Yalitza Aparicio), these women often leave everything behind - their families, their friends, and their homes - to earn a better living for themselves and their loved ones in the city.

It's a good thing I know this already, because this is not information you will receive from Roma. Don't expect a commentary on Mexico's political suppression during this time period either; every social and political angle possible with a film like this has unfortunately been rendered inconsequential, and it really is a tremendous waste of potential.

Roma is written exclusively by Alfonso Cuaron - whose most celebrated movies have been co-written with a collaborator. It shows. Whereas the purpose of a good screenplay is to adequately demonstrate a character's motivation within the confines established by exposition, the characters of Roma behave like puppets. Cuaron, of course, is the puppet-master - as this film is based on his own memories - and the characters speak and move when and where Cuaron needs them to - not because they seem to be acting out of their own volition.

Do you see the pattern here? Without a well-established setting, don't expect to have good characters, and without good characters, don't expect to have a decent story. The arc in Roma is practically non-existent, and the characters - who we never get to know particularly well - are pretty much the same at the end of the film as they are in the beginning. It really is a shame because I so would have liked to know them better.

To conclude, while I can certainly appreciate certain aspects of Roma, this film wasn't made for me - and it probably wasn't made for you either. Alfonso Cuaron made this film for Alfonso Cuaron, and you or I will never be able to appreciate this film as much as he can. This is my main grievance with Roma.

I suppose that's the trouble with telling such a personal tale, and while I understand Cuaron's desire to stay faithful to his memories, it's simply impossible to retain the story's original impact without tailoring it specifically for audiences. What I had hoped would be one of my favorite films of the year has left me, I'm very sorry to say, more than a bit disappointed.

Art, not entertainmentReviewed byscott_j_marshall-33-567110Vote: 5/10

I can imagine this film to be one that students might be shown. Look at the detail, the framing of the shots, the pacing of the story, etc. It's all very impressive as far as the depiction of life in Mexico in the 70s is concerned (I imagine, I wasn't there). However, it is one of the most mundane, pointless movies I have ever seen. Sometimes you watch character based movies where the storyline is extremely simple, but the characters and acting are amazing. Think Cate Blanchett in Blue Jasmine or Little Fish, or movies like Boyhood which tell a very basic story, but draw you in with an amazing ensemble of acting talent.Roma is not up to that standard. It's realistic, well acted blah blah blah, but you will get to the end of the movie and feel nothing. Except maybe, "what was the point of that?"This is one for movie nerds, not movie fans who want to be entertained

Better than AmbienReviewed byrbcohen-21503Vote: 2/10

Anyone that thinks this is a great film is welcome to watch my Bar Mitzvah movies. I spent 2 hours watching this waiting for something to happen. It's now 2 or 3 hours later and I've completely forgotten all about it.
