CHINESE PROPAGANDAReviewed bybearbabytiggerVote: 2/10
Air Strike is an action-packed film that celebrates the real-life story of how an undermanned and ill-equipped Chinese air force took on the mighty Japanese Imperial bombers of World War II and fought back with intense bravery. Bruce Willis is at his best playing a role inspired by the exploits of American advisers helping the Chinese during WW2 like Flying Tigers Commander Claire Chennault. There are subtle nuances too in the portrayal of ordinary people of Chongqing who refuse to let war violate their culture. I found pathos in the scene of how the Japanese targeted the civilian air-raid shelters, killing thousands of people in one bombing run. It's hard to watch, and knowing that it actually happened makes it that much more poignant. The movie shows the inhuman cruelty of war, but also the hope and resilience of the human spirit in adversity.
Starting with the positives, I loved the performances from some of the actors I've never heard of. Particularly Ye Liu, he's a great a leading man and much stronger than Bruce Willis in the film. Really love the actor Wei Fan who played Uncle Cui too. The children in the film also are stand-outs
The film is filled with very traditional Chinese elements as well as some tense action sequences, a journey with a spy and a bizarre pig story that really works. There are some intense scenes that caught me by surprise and a bit hard to watch. Particularly one in a cave where thousands suffocate.
Because of all the news around this movie, I did some research on this chapter of history between China and Japan. This film is based off a true story of the bombing of Chongqing. It feels like it's the director's attempt to tell a story on a broad canvas of China's experience in WW2 to the rest of the world.
The movie has many flaws, but has tremendous heart which is why I'm giving it a 10. As a westerner, I had no idea that China suffered so much in WW2.. This film gave me great empathy to the people of China and all they had suffered.
