The Reviews for The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018) 720p

Sexuality vs Religion vs Society vs Individual MoralityReviewed byorganicsocialVote: 10/10

This debate is raging in most parts of the free world today. In a way this movie is the closest to reality I've seen among the movies made about homosexuality. It is comforting to see the filmmakers acknowledging the complexity of human sexuality rather than making it all about LGBTQ rights, which might be the underlying aspect but not blatantly put forward.

The film is an unabashed expose on the so called reformation or treatment centers for LGBTQ kids operated by Christian or other orthodox communities. How they are just making it up as they go along and don't have a clue about what they are doing. This can't be said in a more straightforward way than the movie does.

The biggest problem of our times is that we don't have enough tangible problems. There are still losses and heartbreaks but overtly, there is not enough struggle to really focus on. Traumas still occur but we as society have become too cynical to care about those who suffer. We have become more civilised but we have lost the openness. We don't go to real wars on ideologies but we constantly force our perspective on others psychologically.

Miseducation is such an appropriate word in the title of this movie which raises the question that are we now too scared to even experiment? Perhaps the society is scared; more than ever. The western world is in an uncharted territory with the open acceptance of LGBTQ community. Governments allow it, Churches don't. Law allows it, Religion doesn't. Then there are these hacks who are ashamed to admit their own inadequacies and instead believe they can cure sexual orientation. What a scam!

Moretz is worth watching in this film and is supported well by this new actress Shasha Lane who debuted in American Honey (A film about American teenage wasteland; another must watch). Rest of the cast also deliver strong performances especially Emily Skeggs as this self-deluded fanatic with a seething attraction for same gender and John Gallagher as this 'reformed' gay man who seems confident outside but is all mush inside.

Check it out for Chloe Graze Moretz's outstanding performanceReviewed bypaul-allaerVote: 7/10

"The Miseducation of Cameron Post" (2018 release; 90 min.) brings the story of Cameron. As the movie opens, we get to know Cameron, a 14 or 15 yr. old teenager. She is seen making out with her friend Coley. Later on, Cameron and Coley and their dates are going to the 1993 prom, but it's not long that Cameron and Coley sneak out. Alas, they are found making out, and before we know it, Cam's aunt Ruth is sending her to God's Promise, a gay conversion camp of sorts, to correct Cameron's same sex attractions (SSA) and "gender confusion"... At this point we're 10 min. into the movie but to tell you more of the plot would spoil your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.

Couple of comments: the movie is written and directed by Desiree Akhavan, who previously brought us "Appropriate Behaviour". The script is based on the book of the same name by Emily Danforth. I have not read the book, and hence I cannot comment how faithful the film remains to the book. The movie takes a critical look to the so-called gay conversion practice that exists in certain segments of the population. I don't know why the movie is set in 1993 specifically, but there are plenty of appropriate clues, including Cameron's cassette of the Breeders' The Last Splash, a Clinton/Gore sticker, etc. Chloe Grace Moretz brings yet another great (dare I say, kick-ass) performance as Cameron. Sasha Lane, on the other hand, is underused as one of Cameron's friends at God's Promise. There is plenty of good music in the film, including a nice original score from Julian Wass, and several great song placements. Imagine my surprise when in the movie's concluding scene, the Feelies come on with "When Company Comes", which is played in its entirety. Bottom line: while at times the movie feels a bit subdued, it nevertheless is a nice little film, and I can't wait to see what Desiree Akhavan will do next, as she is surely an up-and-coming directing talent.

"The Miseducation of Cameron Post" premiered at this year's Sundance film festival to positive acclaim. It recently opened at my local art-house theater here in Cincinnati. The Sunday early evening screening where I saw this at was attended poorly (exactly 4 people, including myself). That's unfortunate. If you are a fan of Chloe Grace Moretz, or simply are interested in a quality indie movie, I'd readily suggest you check it out, be it in the theater, on VOD, or eventually on DVD/Blu-ray, and draw your own conclusion.

Boy Erased + But I'm A Cheerleader = The Miseducation of Cameron PostReviewed byworkoutsmurfVote: 2/10

Ugh, seriously, what is Hollywood doing. Boy Erased was released this year, and a great film, this is seriously the same film with a female lead, has feminism gone so far now that they have to simply take every film and replace any male lead with a female one? But I'm A Cheerleader was a campy romp back in 1999, had a fantastic cast and was a great watch!! You don't see a male lead copy of that film anywhere. Let's get serious about this Hollywood. DON'T GET ME WRONG....I've adored Chloe Grage Moretz since the Amityville Horror remake, followed her throughout her career so far and have basically loved everything she's been in. Except this.....her acting is great, yet all I could think of while watching this was "It's a rip off of something already done". I almost got my copy of "But I'm A Cheerleader" out and was going to play the movies side by side to see if even the dialogue was the same, that's how much I feel these two films are alike. The story is one that needs to be told, how no one should be told they're evil or wrong for who they love, but we already had that exact message this year with this EXACT same situation with Boy Erased, why do this? Chloe's acting is a 8, but the film itself left a bad taste in my mouth, and a feeling of being ripped off. If you do decide to watch this, I hope you get more pleasure out of it than I did.
